THE BLACK EYED PEAS

The Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D. World Tour was a large-scale global concert production spanning Asia, North America and Europe. We designed a futuristic visual world for one of the most ambitious live productions of its time.

energy never dies

The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies) marked the Black Eyed Peas’ most ambitious album, and the tour built around it was designed to align. Lasers, video walls and a continuous flow of real-time generated motion graphics transformed each arena into something closer to a cinematic environment than a conventional concert stage. The visual language had to hold at massive scale: stadiums with thousands of people, vast distances, every moment amplified…

Van Leer conceived the stage visuals as a coherent world, while also triggering and performing the visuals live. Rather than a sequence of song-by-song backdrops, the show became a sustained visual architecture; synchronised in real time with the music, responsive to the performers’ energy through blob-tracking technology, and shaping distinct atmospheres for each section of the performance. In close collaboration with Vello Virkhaus and XiteLabs (V Squared Labs), the imagery drew from science fiction, digital abstraction, and the group’s own aesthetic of urban futurism: a space-like club environment, equal parts raw and otherworldly.

The North American leg opened in early 2010, followed by the European tour later that year. A concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles was broadcast live to 500 cinemas across the United States. In parallel, the visual approach extended into broadcast culture through the Black Eyed Peas’ performance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, featuring one of the largest live flash mobs in television history, seen by millions worldwide.
