Man x Woman

Man x Woman is a music video for Amsterdam electronic duo Full Crate & Mar, built around the science of cymatics - the phenomenon in which sound makes matter move. Two figures play a table of vibrating liquids and earth, and from the frequencies, something rises.
“The clip comes to life. Slowly but surely the music starts to take on more and more visual forms, minimalist synths and drums resound in the splashing puddles of water and crumbling clay.”
a metaphysical glittery cut R&B trip
Cymatics is the study of visible sound: the patterns that emerge when vibration moves through water, sand, or clay. What the eye normally cannot see - the shape of a frequency, the geometry of a beat - cymatics makes suddenly, strangely visible. It is science that looks like magic.
In Man x Woman, Full Crate and Mar operate a contraption of trays and surfaces, each one tuned to a different material. As the music plays, water splashes into geometric forms, clay cracks and shifts, and the patterns of the track become a physical world. From this world, a figure emerges; danced into being by Rubiën Florens Vyent, Cheraine Baljé, and Devon Suriya Abdoelhafizkhan. Rising from the earth as if conjured by the sound itself.
The video was co-directed by Ruben Van Leer and Judith Veenendaal, shot at Castellum Aquae in Bloemendaal The Netherlands.
“The Amsterdam-native electronic duo play that glittery cut against a romantic dystopian narrative, featuring Full Crate as an ominous mad-scientist-type rocking a very Minority Report-esque contraption.”
